Two Major Feast days In September

Compiled by
Father Demetrios Serfes

On September 1st the Eastern Orthodox Church begins the Ecclesiastical New Year. Two major feast days are commemorated during this month: the first major feast is on September 8th "The Nativity of the Theotokos", and the second major feast is on September 14th "The Adoration of the Holy Cross".

I would like to humbly share with you piously the following prayer to the Cross of Our Lord and let us all use this prayer often.

In the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit:

O most honorable and life-giving Cross of the Lord, through which we, for the sake of Christ's sufferings, have made peace with God and were delivered from servitude to the devil! Thou art a two-edged sword reaching down to the origins of darkness and turning to flight every power of the enemy.

With thine image, we sign our foreheads, breast and shoulders in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. The holy sign doth protect us from the day of our baptism even to the hour of our repose; it will also overshadow our perishable remains until the last day of this visible world.

Therefore, we lovingly honor and venerate thy holy image; be it made of wood, copper, stone, gold, silver or any other material. We believe also that the grace and power of Christ our God, Who was crucified on thee, is present in any sign of thee, signed with faith either upon the air or any other object.

Therefore, we offer thee this hymn of praise, crying out in compunction:

O Cross of Christ, worthy of all veneration!
Be thou imprinted upon our minds,
enter our hearts,
permeate our spirit and souls,
reflect thyself in our thoughts, desires, aspirations and actions.

Invincible and incomprehensible is the power of the most honorable and life-creating Cross of the Lord! Forsake not us sinners, unworthy and sinful though we be, of thine aid, but grant us assistance, instructing and teaching us always.

O Holy Cross! Become akin with our whole nature so that even at the time of the terrible but glorious second coming of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, when thou shalt appear in the heavens with glory ineffable, we shall be able to look upon thee with joy and gladness and be found worthy to stand at the right hand of the holy Judge of righteousness, glorifying HIm with the Father and the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

O Lord, Save Thy People And Bless Thine Inheritance.

May Our Gracious Loving God help us pick up our Cross and follow Him.

Amen!

In The Love Of Christ Our Lord,
