President of the Decani Monastery Relief Fund USA

Last month's attack, during which a grenade hit the wall behind the church, illustrates the absolute necessity for construction of the protective western wall at Decani Monastery. On four occasions between February 27, 2000 and March 30, 2007, Decani has been attacked and damaged:

  1. February 27, 2000 - Six grenades hit the Decani Monastery.
  2. June 22, 2000 - Nine grenades hit the Decani Monastery.
  3. March 17, 2004, and 2004 - Seven grenades fell around the monastery walls.
  4. March 30, 2007 - One grenade hit the wall behind the church.

The wall was completed barely in time to serve as a shield against this last terrorist attack. Such attacks have become all too common in Kosovo where the small Christian minority lives precariously under the ever-present shadow of anti-Christian violence.

We thank God that no one was injured during this most recent attack. But now we face the responsibility of assuring that the new wall can be paid for. The cost to complete the wall was over $125,000 of which $23,000 yet remains to be paid.

The Decani Monastery cannot pay this balance since the monks apply whatever resources they are given directly to assisting the desperate people who live in the area. They have no financial resources to use to protect themselves. Therefore we want to pay the remaining debt for the wall using donations obtained through the Decani Monastery Relief Fund USA. We must do all we can to protect and assist those who do the actual work of providing aid to the population of Serbian Christians the Fund exists to serve.

The Decani Monastery Relief Fund has also recently helped to purchase a truck for the diocesan homeless shelter by raising nearly $13,000 toward the $15,000 purchase price. Only $2,000 remains to be paid toward obtaining the truck.

These amounts may seem large to us as individuals but when we all give what we can from our own resources through the Fund, we can together do much to fulfill the needs of both those who rely on our charity and those who do the work of ministering to them.

In the name of our most generous and loving God Who truly gives us everything we need, let us hasten to aid our less fortunate brothers and sisters in Christ by supporting the efforts of those who actually do the work of ministering to their material needs, thus enabling them to continue surviving through this time of danger and hardship.

Please send your donation to the following address. Indicate if it is to go to the Western Wall Fund, the Truck Fund, or the General Fund. As always, your donations are fully tax deductible.
